Surfing YouTube can bring up some real gems and Hussein Chalayan is definitely the shiniest in my Fashionology books! Over the years he has pushed the boundaries of fashion and created collections that can be better described as pieces of art.
He makes technology beautiful and even Lady Gaga is a fan – the telephone themed dress she wore on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross was designed by him! I have listed a few examples of my favourite pieces below…
His 2007 collection displayed at Paris Fashion Week was composed of dresses that morphed into other outfit entirely!
A model was standing on the runway in a long geisha-like dress; after the model pauses to pose, we presume, the dress starts to twitch. Before you know it has restructured, folded into itself and transformed in to a short cocktail dress. Genius! [VIDEO]
That same year Chalayan sent his models down the catwalk in futuristic video dresses that acted as screens for the colourful, swirly video clips. His autumn Fashion Week 2007 collection was lit up by these chameleon video dresses and glowing astronaut-like helmets, worn by the likes of Agnes Deyn. [VIDEO]
Chalayan also wowed fashionistas on the front row of his Swarovski show in Tokyo in 2008. He created dresses covered in crystals and lit them up with vibrant red laser beams; the pieces when lit looked like burning embers. [VIDEO]
More recently in his spring 2009 collection Hussein featured Latex moulded dresses that looked as if they were being blown away! [VIDEO]
Just imagine it as fashion of the future; you go to work in one outfit and with the click of a button your mundane office clothes transform into a cute LBD and you’re ready to hit the town!
Hussein Chalayan you have been crowned, and the Fashionology blog salutes you!
